Our final Law Dawg from the Class of 2023 comes from Nick Brown. Harley is a hound mix, constantly in search of treats, affection, and someone to chase her around. While Harley normally resides with Nick’s neighbor, Nick argues that O.C.G.A. § 4-8-21 defines an “owner” as “any natural person . . . owning, possessing, harboring, keeping, or having custody or control of a dog.” Applied here, Harley’s frequent trips to Nick’s house create occasional ownership periods for Nick, thus qualifying Harley as this month’s law dawg.

Harley enjoys visiting Nick’s house for her regularly scheduled treats, such as the filet mignon shown in the video. Due to Harley’s high food motivation, Nick has been able to teach her several tricks. However, Nick currently seeks advice on how to teach Harley to howl on command as Nick has tired of yelling “awooo!” at a very silent and confused Harley. Being the wonderful guest she is, Harley enjoys getting to know everyone’s pets and has been known to join Nick and his cat, Tiger, on walks. Harley’s dedication to building the community around her and her never-ending pursuit of new friends align with the highest values of the University of Georgia School of Law, which is honored to name her as the Law Dawg of the Month.

All members of the Law School Community (students, faculty and staff) are invited to submit a photo for possible selection as the Law Dawg. Please note that honorary Law Dawgs (i.e. those of the feline, equine, porcine, avian, reptilian, etc. persuasion) are eligible as well. Please send your Law Dawg photo(s) to aburnett@uga.edu.
