We share a special bond with dogs that has evolved over thousands of years.  But it has only been in the last few years, particularly since the pandemic, since these loyal canine companions have evolved from being more than just house pets.  Our hounds have nudged, wagged, sniffed, snuggled, and loved their way into our daily work lives.

I for one could not be happier.

And so it is that today we celebrate Man’s (and Woman’s) proverbial Best Friend.  That’s right, it’s International Dog Day 2024!  (sorry cat lovers, you already had your special day).

For me, today requires a recognition and celebration of my three office companions: Archie, his twin brother George, and their rapscallion nephew (and my grandpuppy), Ovie.

Archie (age 14 3/4) serves as Receptionist and Resident Alpha.  He is a sweetheart who never fails to greet, usually with a shoe or sock.  He works for treats.

George (age 14 3/4) is Chief of Security.  He is a sweetheart who never fails to slobber his human family and brother Archie with incredibly wet kisses.  He works for treats.

Ovie (age 5) is Office Manager and Alpha-in-Training (sorry George!).  Ovie attended the University of Michigan, where he earned a PhD in Squirrel Chasing.  He works for treats.

The benefits of dogs in the workplace are many.  Here are my personal top five reasons why having a dog in the workplace is awesome for my mental health and well-being:

  1. Stress Reduction and Increased Productivity

Studies have shown that having dogs in the workplace can reduce stress levels and improve overall well-being. Interacting with dogs releases endorphins, which help lower stress and increase productivity. A joyful wagging tail or a friendly nuzzle can be just the remedy needed to brighten a busy workday.

  1. Enhanced Social Connections

Dogs are natural social magnets. They have an uncanny ability to bring people together and foster a sense of camaraderie among coworkers. Having a dog in the office encourages interaction, fosters communication, and creates a positive work environment. In fact the best feedback I ever received doing a webinar was when my dogs made an impromptu appearance.

  1. Security and Alertness

Dogs possess remarkable instincts, making them excellent security guards in the workplace. Their acute hearing and sense of smell allow them to detect any potential threats, including mitigating risks and providing a sense of safety to everyone present.

  1. Reception and Welcoming Committees

With their friendly demeanor and innate sense of hospitality, dogs can act as unofficial receptionists. They happily greet guests, wagging their tails and creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. Having a four-legged greeter in the office can leave a lasting impression on visitors, making them feel welcome from the moment they step through the door.

  1. Kindness in Chief Officers

Dogs are known for their unconditional love, loyalty, and forgiveness. These qualities can be particularly valuable in the high-pressure environment of a home office. Having a canine companion by your side can help alleviate stress and anxiety while reminding you to embrace kindness and patience.

A New Era of Canine Companionship

International Dog Day 2024 serves as a testament to the incredible transformation we have witnessed in our society’s perception of dogs. From being considered mere pets to occupying important roles in our workplaces, dogs have proven their worth time and again.

Take a moment to appreciate the impact these incredible creatures have had on our culture and embrace the joy they bring into our homes and workplaces. Together, let us celebrate the loyal companions who have become our most cherished coworkers.

Happy International Dog Day 2024!   Feel free to share your dogs at work pictures in the comments.
